Certification Program Title:Fitter for Installation of Bolt Connections in Pressurized Systems in Critical Applications according to DIN/EN 1591-4:2013 as from 27/08/2014
Admission Requirements:
  • Fitters for installation of bolt connections, who have acquired their practical and theoretical skills as part of vocational training or a similar trade qualification, can be admitted to the examination immediately.
  • Fitters for installation of bolt connections, who have acquired their skills exclusively by learning on site by working with trained fitters and without formal theoretical training, must attend a recognized training course offered by a training provider comprising a minimum of 4 teaching units.
  • Participants, who have no qualitative training or experience, must take part in a training course comprising a minimum of 8 teaching units in theory and practice and are then admitted to the examination.
Examination Components:
  • Written exam (multiple choice)
  • Practical exam (Carrying out a task to bolt flange connections)
Required Competencies:

In the examination participants prove their knowledge in the following areas:

  • Types of bolt connections
  • How gaskets work
  • Types of gaskets and their respective characteristics
  • Relationship between bolt length (stretch), bolt force and pressure per unit area
  • General causes of failure of bolt connections
  • Loss of bolt force and subsequent consequences
  • Applied and remaining bolt force
  • General health and safety precautions
  • Secure de-installation of the connection
  • Preparation of the sealing surface
  • Recognition of errors and defects
  • Alignment of the sealing face and even distance
  • Storage, handling, preparation and installation of the gasket
  • Effects of thread friction on the bolt force on application of torque controlled tightening methods
  • The importance of the use of the defined thread lubricant
  • Tightening processes and corresponding accuracies
  • Necessity for tightening processes
  • Tightening process patterns
  • Leak tightness classes
  • Requirement to fulfil a certain leak tightness class
  • Manual torque controlled tightening
  • Maintenance and calibration of manual torque wrenches
  • Requirements of hydraulically torque controlled tightening and tightening with hydraulically driven collets
  • Confirmation that the joint can be put back into operation
  • Documentation of the work carried out
  • Documentation of deviations or irregularities
  • Monitoring of emission and procedures in cases of leakage

Fitters for installation of bolt connections are capable of installing, de-installing and tightening bolt joints according to the requirements of DIN EN 1591-4:2013
