      Emissions Compensated Energy Sources

The combustion of fossil fuels generates direct emissions, predominantly CO2, the amount of which entering the atmosphere should be reduced within the framework of global climate protection.

The holder of the certificate compensates for the emissions caused by the sale or use of fossil fuels by purchasing emission reduction credits (CO2-certificates) and cancellation or suspension thereof.

The calculation is made on the basis of the emissions generated by the combustion of the energy source. A monitoring concept that is inspected by TÜV Rheinland each year and that set outs the emissions in aggregated form, records the quantities generated. The quantity of emissions determined is consolidated over a certain period of time in metric tons CO2-equivalents. At least this amount of emission reduction credits (CO2-certificates) must be cancelled in order to ensure climate-neutrality. Only recognised CO2-certificates are used for compensation, in accordance with recognised international project standards (e.g. EUA, VCU, GS-VER etc.).

      It is verified that:

      • The emissions factors are correctly applied to the fuel.
      • The quantity of emissions is calculated correctly using activity data and the emissions factor.
      • A monitoring concept exists that meets the requirements for calculation of the quantity of emissions over a certain period of time with regard to quality management and data acquisition and storage.
      • Only standard registered emissions rights and/or credits are used for neutralisation.
      • The holder of the certificate properly cancels the emission reduction credits in a correspondingly designated registry.
